Perplexity SEO Checker: The 3 Tool Types Compared in 2026

A concrete corridor in daylight beside a Kairosy report showing how Perplexity answered and what it cited

A Perplexity SEO checker answers one narrow question: when Perplexity writes an answer in your category, does your domain make the source row, and is the sentence next to it doing you any favors? That is a different measurement problem from Google rank tracking, and three separate kinds of product are currently sold under the same label.

This guide splits them into rank tracking tools, visibility tools and reputation tools, names at least two real products in each group, lists prices checked on vendor sites in August 2026, and closes with a chooser written around what you need rather than what vendors lead with.

How Does Perplexity Pick and Cite Its Sources?

Start with the plumbing, because it explains why you cannot simply repoint a keyword rank tracker at Perplexity and call it done.

Perplexity documents two user agents on its crawler docs page, and they follow opposite rules.

PerplexityBot identifies itself as PerplexityBot/1.0 inside a standard Mozilla user-agent string. The docs describe it as "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" and state it "is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models." It honors robots.txt, so one stray disallow rule keeps you out of the index Perplexity draws from.

Perplexity-User identifies itself as Perplexity-User/1.0 and fetches a page live because somebody's question needs it. Perplexity says it "generally ignores robots.txt rules" precisely because a human triggered the visit.

Both agents publish their IP ranges — perplexitybot.json and perplexity-user.json — so you can tell a real crawl from a spoofed user-agent string in your server logs.

Now the output side. Perplexity's developer overview describes its products as returning "web-grounded answers with built-in citations" and "raw, ranked web search results." Every answer is assembled from live retrieval and delivered with a numbered list of sources. There is no page two and no durable slot to hold: rewrite the question slightly and the source set shifts.

That is the entire reason a Perplexity SEO checker is its own product category. It has no results page to scrape. It has to ask questions on a schedule and log what came back, over and over, until the pattern is stable enough to act on.

Calibrate your expectations on volume before you spend. SE Ranking's AI traffic study, published June 18, 2026 from Google Analytics data across 101,574 websites tracked between January 2025 and April 2026, put Perplexity at 7.23% of AI referral traffic, behind ChatGPT at 74.78% and Gemini at 11.56%. It is a minority channel — but a citation-first one, which is exactly why cited domains get clicks out of it.

Before you pay anyone, make sure the crawler can reach you at all. Our free AI crawl checker reads your robots.txt and reports which AI agents you are allowing.

What Are the Three Types of Perplexity SEO Checker?

Every vendor in this space says "AI visibility," which hides a real product split. Sort by the question each type is built to answer:

TypeQuestion it answersWhat it reportsCovered below
Rank trackingWhere do I sit in the source row for the prompts I registered?Position, mention rate, prompt historySE Ranking, Semrush
VisibilityHow much of my category's answer space do I hold versus rivals?Share of voice, impressions, source domainsOtterly.ai, Peec AI, Profound
ReputationWhat does Perplexity actually say about me, and who taught it that?Sentiment per answer, cited URLs, competitor preferenceKairosy, Brand24

Most buying mistakes happen at this fork. A team that needs to know why an engine keeps hedging about their product buys a position tracker and gets a line chart. A team that needs a defensible month-over-month number buys a sentiment scanner and cannot report a trend to finance. Pick the column first, the vendor second.

Which Perplexity SEO Rank Tracking Tools Watch Prompt Positions?

We keep this section deliberately short — the category already has a dedicated comparison in our Perplexity rank tracker roundup. Two hybrids belong here because they bolt Perplexity onto an SEO suite you may already be paying for.

SE Ranking sells this as the AI Search add-on: $89.00/month billed monthly, or $71.20/month on annual billing, layered on a base plan (Core lists at $129.00/month, Growth at $279.00/month). The add-on opens at 200 prompts and scales to 1,000, and its AI Results Tracker covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT. Watch the unit: one prompt on one platform equals one check, so 50 prompts across three engines consumes 150 of them.

Semrush lists its AI Visibility Toolkit at $99/mo per domain billed annually, including 25 custom prompts with daily AI rankings and mentions pulled from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. Twenty-five prompts is a tight budget for a broad category, so map your questions before you commit.

If you already live inside one of those suites, a perplexity seo rank tracking tool is a line item rather than a new vendor relationship. If you don't, the standalone products below generally buy more Perplexity-specific detail per dollar.

What Are the Best Perplexity SEO Visibility Tools?

Visibility tools register a fixed prompt set, re-ask it on a schedule, and chart how often you appear against named competitors.

Otterly.ai

Otterly.ai prices at $29/month for Lite (15 prompts), $189/month for Standard (100 prompts) and $489/month for Premium (400 prompts), with a custom Enterprise tier. Annual billing takes 15% off, extra prompts run $99 per 100, and there is a free trial for new accounts.

The detail that matters here: Perplexity sits in the base engine set alongside ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot, while Claude, Gemini and Google AI Mode are billed as extra engines. Otterly's own newsroom post dated December 4, 2025 says G2's Winter 2026 report named it a High Performer in the Answer Engine Optimization category.

Peec AI

Peec AI tracks visibility, position and sentiment across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Mode, with competitor benchmarking and source views built for agency reporting. Its homepage claims 3,000+ brands and agencies and a 4.9/5 rating on G2.

One honest caveat, and it is a live one as of August 2026: the Peec pricing page renders its numbers client-side. Pull the HTML and you get four tier names — Starter, Pro, Advanced, Enterprise — plus country limits, and no prices at all. Several roundups quote secondhand figures for Peec anyway. We won't. Open the pricing page in a browser and read today's number before you plan a budget around it.

Profound

Profound no longer publishes self-serve numbers for brands: its pricing page (checked September 24, 2026) shows a free Trial and a custom Enterprise plan, sold through a demo.

Read the engine column before you sign. The Trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, with no Perplexity. Perplexity appears only on Enterprise, which reaches up to nine engines. If Perplexity is the reason you are shopping at all, Profound's real entry point is an Enterprise contract; Vendr's anonymized buyer data (a third-party source) puts the median contract at $34,500 a year.

Which Perplexity Reputation Checkers Show Sentiment and Cited Sources?

Reputation tools answer a question a share-of-voice chart cannot: appearing in the answer is worthless if the sentence around your name is a warning. This is also the layer where AI reputation management starts.

Kairosy

Kairosy is our product, and it belongs in this column rather than the rank-tracker one. A scan puts real purchase questions to Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, grades each reply as positive, neutral or negative, records which rival got recommended in your place, and lists the URLs every engine leaned on. The free tier is a 7-day trial with the complete report; paid plans are Basic $29, Pro $99 and Growth $399 per month, adding weekly rescans per brand and market, daily prompt tracking, and country-specific scans across 25 markets.

What it does not do: return a numeric position for a keyword. If your KPI is written as a rank number, buy from the first section instead.

A concrete example of the reputation view: Kairosy's scan of Pipedrive gives it 71/100 overall, with Perplexity its strongest engine at 81/100 against Gemini's 58/100, and surfaces limited reporting, integration and sync problems, and fast-climbing pricing as the complaints engines keep repeating. Same product, two engines, two different stories — a single-engine checker would have shown you only one of them.

If Perplexity specifically is the engine you need watched week over week, that is what Perplexity brand monitoring is built for.

Brand24

Brand24 arrives at the same job from social listening. Its AI Visibility module tracks what LLMs say about a brand across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, DeepSeek, Grok and Copilot, reporting mention volume, sentiment, a presence score, average position and the sources feeding your visibility.

Price is the deciding factor. Plans run $249/month (Individual), $349 (Team), $499 (Pro) and $699 (Business), with Enterprise from $1,499 — and on Brand24's pricing page the AI Visibility module is marked as an add-on on every tier below Enterprise. It earns its keep if you already run Brand24 for web and social mentions and want AI answers landing in the same dashboard.

How Do You Choose the Best Perplexity SEO Software for Your Needs?

Start from the sentence you need to be able to say at the end of the quarter, then buy the tool that produces it.

  • "We went from cited on 2 of 20 buying questions to 9 of 20." You need prompt-level tracking with history — SE Ranking, Semrush, or Otterly's registered prompt log.
  • "A competitor is being recommended over us, and here is the page causing it." You need a reputation checker that stores the cited URL next to the sentiment of the sentence, not just a mention count.
  • "We hold roughly a fifth of our category's answer space, and it is trending up." That is a visibility tool with competitor benchmarking.
  • "We have no budget this quarter." Run the free checks in the next section and sample prompts by hand.

Then run five questions past any shortlist, because these are what actually move the invoice:

  • Does the entry plan include Perplexity at all? Profound's free Trial does not — Perplexity is Enterprise-only.
  • How is quota counted? SE Ranking bills one check per prompt per engine, so a five-engine setup quietly divides your allowance by five.
  • Are engines bundled or à la carte? Otterly includes Perplexity in its base four but charges extra for Claude, Gemini and AI Mode.
  • Does it keep the cited URLs, or only the scores? A score tells you something is wrong. A URL tells you what to go fix.
  • Can it ask country-specific questions? Perplexity answers a UK buyer differently from a US one, and one global number hides that.

One filter that costs nothing: during any trial, hand the tool your five hardest buying questions — the comparison ones with a competitor's name in them. If the report comes back as a number with no supporting text, you bought a dashboard, not a checker.

What Free Checks Should You Run Before Paying for a Perplexity SEO Checker?

Four things worth doing this week, none of which require a card.

  1. Confirm the crawler can reach you. Run your domain through the AI crawl checker. Blocking PerplexityBot removes you from the index Perplexity searches, while Perplexity-User can still fetch you live — the worst combination available, since you get the bandwidth cost without the discovery.
  2. Publish an llms.txt. The llms.txt generator builds a plain-text map of your best pages. No engine has committed to consuming it, so treat it as cheap insurance and a useful content inventory rather than a ranking lever.
  3. Interview Perplexity yourself. Logged out, ask your five highest-intent buying questions and log every cited domain in a sheet. Repeat monthly. Two months of that data tells you whether you need the visibility column or the reputation column.
  4. Take one full free scan. Kairosy runs the complete report at no cost for 7 days, Perplexity included, which is enough to see whether the engines are hedging about you before you commit budget.

Perplexity SEO Checker FAQs: Your Top Questions

Is There a Free Perplexity SEO Checking Tool?

Nothing is free without limits, because every check costs the vendor a live retrieval. What exists is meaningful free tiers and trials: Kairosy's one full report a month, Otterly's free trial for new accounts, Peec AI's free trial, and manual prompt sampling in Perplexity itself. Robots and schema checks — like our AI crawl checker — are genuinely unlimited because they read your site, not the engine.

What Is the Best Perplexity SEO Tool if I Already Pay for Semrush or SE Ranking?

Add the module you already have access to rather than a seventh subscription. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit at $99/mo per domain (annual) and SE Ranking's $89/mo AI Search add-on both include Perplexity, and both sit next to keyword data you are already reporting on. Add a reputation checker later, once you know which prompts are the problem.

Do I need a separate checker for every AI engine?

No, and paying per engine is how budgets get wasted. Every tool listed here is multi-engine. The real question is whether Perplexity is in the tier you can afford — which is why Profound's Perplexity-free Trial is worth flagging twice.

What Are the Best Perplexity SEO Tracking Tools for Agencies?

Agencies need multi-client dashboards and exportable competitor charts, which points at Peec AI and Profound at the visibility end, and Brand24 if clients already expect social listening in the same report. Confirm seat counts and client-workspace limits during the demo — that is usually what pushes an agency into a custom tier.

Which Is the Best Online Perplexity Rank Tracker for a Solo Founder?

At solo-founder budgets, Otterly's $29 Lite plan is the cheapest way to watch 15 registered prompts daily. Pair it with a free monthly reputation scan so you catch a negative source before it hardens into the consensus answer.

Does blocking PerplexityBot remove my brand from Perplexity's answers?

It removes your pages from the search index Perplexity builds, per its crawler documentation — but it does not stop Perplexity from talking about you using everyone else's pages. Review sites, forums and competitor comparisons still get cited. Blocking the bot mostly costs you the ability to be your own source.

Pick the column that matches your KPI, verify Perplexity is in the tier you can actually afford, and insist on seeing the cited URLs. That is most of what separates a useful Perplexity SEO checker from a chart you stop opening after three weeks.
