Why Is My Brand Missing From Perplexity Answers? 6-Step Fix (2026)

Your brand is missing from Perplexity answers because Perplexity did not retrieve a page that names you for that exact question, in that market, at that moment. It runs a live search for every query and writes from the few pages it pulls back. If none of them mention you, the answer cannot either.
That makes the problem diagnosable. Every Perplexity answer ships with its sources, so you can work backward: are your pages reachable, do they match the query, are they citable, and who owns the sources it preferred instead?
Why Is My Brand Missing From Perplexity Answers? The Four Usual Causes
When people ask "why is my brand missing from perplexity answers," the cause falls into one of four buckets, and each has a different fix.
- Not retrievable. PerplexityBot is blocked by robots.txt or a WAF rule, or the page that should answer is not in any index Perplexity searches.
- Wrong query fit. You have a homepage and a features page, but the buyer asked "best X for Y" or "X alternatives," and the only pages that answer that wording belong to someone else.
- Not citable. The page is reachable but has no visible date, no answer-first paragraph, and no structure a retrieval system can lift a clean passage from.
- Competitors own the sources. Perplexity read a roundup, a Reddit thread, or a review platform, and those pages name three other brands.

The path below (Missing → Check Sources → Check Query Fit → Check Citability → Compare Competitor Sources → Fix → Re-test → Monitor) names the bucket in one afternoon.
How Does Perplexity Build an Answer From Live Retrieval and Citations?
Perplexity, founded in August 2022, is described on Wikipedia as answering "based on current Internet content, citing sources used." The mechanics are clearest in its developer docs. The Sonar chat completions reference returns a citations array ("URLs of sources used to generate the response") and a search_results array where each entry carries a title, url, date and last_updated.
Three details explain most missing-brand cases:
- Retrieval is query-specific and market-specific. The Search API guide exposes a
countryparameter ("ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code such as US, GB, DE, or JP"), asearch_language_filter, and asearch_domain_filter. - Freshness is a first-class signal. The date filter guide lists
search_recency_filtervalues of hour, day, week, month and year, plus separate publication-date and last-updated filters. - Context is rationed.
search_context_sizeis "low," "medium" or "high." Few pages reach the answer window, so indexed is not the same as used.
Sourcing caveat: Perplexity's consumer help center returns HTTP 403 to automated fetches, so this post relies on the public developer docs.

Perplexity also runs two crawlers that behave differently:
| Crawler | What it does (per Perplexity docs) | Respects robots.txt? | Published IP list |
|---|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot | "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity"; "not used to crawl content for AI foundation models" | Yes — Perplexity recommends allowing it | perplexity.com/perplexitybot.json |
| Perplexity-User | Fetches a page on a user's behalf to "help provide an accurate answer" | No — "generally ignores robots.txt rules" because a person initiated the request | perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json |

What Are the Six Steps to Diagnose a Missing Brand on Perplexity? (Step Table)
Kairosy's scan of Solo Stove asked Perplexity "What are the best alternatives to solostove.com?" and got: "The top alternatives to Solo Stove are Breeo X Series 24, TIKI Patio Smokeless Fire Pit, and Cuisinart Cleanburn." Solo Stove's Perplexity score was 60/100, and Breeo held 21% share of voice across the report.
| Step | What you check | Example query: "best alternatives to Solo Stove" |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Check sources | Which URLs Perplexity cited for the exact question | Cited domains in the report include popularmechanics.com (a publisher) and pissedconsumer.com (a complaints site), neither brand-owned |
| 2. Check query fit | Whether any page on your domain answers that wording | An "alternatives" question is answered by comparison content; a product page never matches it |
| 3. Check citability | Access, freshness, structure of that URL | Crawler check for PerplexityBot; datePublished and dateModified present and honest |
| 4. Compare competitor sources | Which sources name the brands Perplexity picked | Perplexity named Breeo, TIKI and Cuisinart Cleanburn; check which cited pages name them, and whether any names Solo Stove as a pick |
| 5. Fix | Close the gap steps 1–4 exposed | Publish a fair comparison page, answer complaint themes on your domain, pitch the roundup editor |
| 6. Re-test | Same query, same market, after re-crawl | Re-ask the alternatives question; compare cited URLs, not just whether the name appears |
| Monitor | Weekly re-scan and alerts | Flag it if Breeo becomes the "preferred" pick |

How Do You Check Which Sources Perplexity Is Actually Reading?
Ask Perplexity the buyer question exactly as a buyer would type it, expand the source list, and log every domain, URL and date. Repeat for the questions that matter in your category: best options, alternatives, complaints, "is it legit," you versus the leader, pricing. If your domain appears in none of the lists, you have a retrieval or query-fit problem, not a sentiment problem.
Two public studies show what Perplexity tends to pull. Profound's citation study (August 2024 to June 2025, 680 million citations) found Reddit was 6.6% of all Perplexity citations, the largest single domain, and 46.7% of citations within Perplexity's top ten sources. Semrush's 13-week study (July 14 to October 12, 2025; 230K prompts, over 100M citations) lists Perplexity's leading sources as Reddit, LinkedIn, NIH, Microsoft and Google.
The long tail matters more than the head, though. A July 2025 arXiv study by Kai-Cheng Yang counted 366,087 citations across 65,000 AI-search responses pointing to 83,533 unique domains. Most citations go to pages you have never heard of, which is why one well-built page can win one specific query.

A scanner shortens this step: Kairosy asks the same buyer questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, classifies each reply, and stores the citation URLs beside the sentence they produced. Kairosy's scan of Siftly (2026-08-05) is a clean "missing" case: 6 of 24 answers were classified invisible, and Perplexity's reply to the complaints question opened with "I'm not familiar with broad, well-documented user complaint patterns for..." Nothing on the web answered the question, so the engine said so.
Does Your Content Fit the Query Perplexity Is Answering?
Query fit is the bucket most teams skip. They confirm the site is crawlable and indexed, then conclude Perplexity is "ignoring" them. But retrieval matches pages to the wording of the question, and most brand sites answer only "what is Brand." Buyers ask five other things.
Map each buyer question to the one URL on your domain that answers it in its first paragraph. Typical gaps:
- "Alternatives to Brand" — no comparison page exists, so a competitor's or a publisher's page fills the slot.
- "Brand complaints" — support docs answer single issues, but nothing summarizes known limitations honestly, so review platforms become the source.
- Market variants — the
countryparameter means Perplexity in the UK retrieves different pages; a USD-only pricing page can vanish there while ranking fine at home.
Write the missing page for the wording that lost, and test it by pasting the buyer's question above your first paragraph: does the paragraph answer it without scrolling?
Is Your Page Citable by Perplexity? Access, Freshness, and Structure Checks
Access
Check robots.txt for a group matching PerplexityBot. RFC 9309 (September 2022) requires crawlers to "use case-insensitive matching to find the group that matches the product token and then obey the rules of the group," so a stray Disallow: / under a wildcard group, or under a "block AI" group, removes you from Perplexity's search results entirely. Then check the CDN. On August 4, 2025, Cloudflare published a report accusing Perplexity of stealth crawling and said it "de-listed them as a verified bot and added heuristics to our managed rules that block this stealth crawling." If your site runs Cloudflare's AI-crawler blocking rules, PerplexityBot may be denied even though robots.txt allows it.

The free AI crawl checker tests 15 search and AI crawlers, including PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, across robots.txt, meta tags and headers, and prints the exact Allow or Disallow line behind a block. Run it on the page from the query-fit step.

Freshness
Perplexity stores a publication date and a last-updated date per result and filters on each, so an undated page competes badly. Follow Google's publication-date guidance here too: show a visible, labeled date, mark datePublished and dateModified in Article or BlogPosting structured data, keep visible and structured values identical, and never bump a date without a real change.
Structure
Retrieval lifts passages, not pages. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under each question-style heading, use real list markup, and give comparison data a real table. Validate it with the schema markup checker. To score all of this at once, the AI-Ready Page Audit runs 33 checks across access, readability, structured data, citability and trust, with a diff against your last audit.
Which Sources Are Your Competitors Cited From, and Why Not You?
For each brand Perplexity named instead of you, list the citing URLs and tag each: publisher roundup, community thread, review platform, competitor's own domain, or directory. The pattern tells you which channel to work. Four Kairosy public reports show what this looks like at the score level:
| Brand (Kairosy public report) | Overall score | Perplexity score | Competitors named in the report |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brooklinen | 58/100 | 52/100 | Parachute, Quince, Boll & Branch |
| Klaviyo | 56/100 | 61/100 | Omnisend, Mailchimp, Brevo |
| Solo Stove | 66/100 | 60/100 | Breeo, TIKI, Cuisinart Cleanburn |
| Siftly | 54/100 | 72/100 | LLM Pulse, Profound, Peec AI |
In the Brooklinen scan, Perplexity's alternatives answer began "The top alternatives to Brooklinen are Parachute, Quince, and Boll &..." and its complaints answer listed "sheets that feel scratchy, thin, pill, tear, or wear out quickly." Both were classified as preferring a competitor, with goodhousekeeping.com and review sites among the cited sources rather than brooklinen.com. When a publisher's page is the source, getting into it beats any on-site edit.
Kairosy's Competitors module automates this: share of voice per rival, plus a topic-gap table of the questions that name a competitor and not you.

How Do You Fix the Gap, Re-Test, and Keep Monitoring Perplexity Answers?
Order the fixes by the bucket you found, cheapest first:
- Unblock. Remove the Disallow, allow-list PerplexityBot's published IP range in the WAF, and re-run the crawl checker until it is green.
- Publish for the losing wording. One page per buyer question, answer in the first paragraph, dated, with structured data. A fair comparison page carries the most leverage for "alternatives" and "vs" queries.
- Earn the third-party sources. Reply in the Reddit threads Perplexity already cites, get listed on the review platforms it reads, and pitch the roundup editor.
- Answer complaints on your own domain. A candid, dated known-issues page is citable; silence hands the complaints question to pissedconsumer.com.
Then re-test: the identical question in the identical market, comparing the cited URL list to your step-1 log. A re-crawled page can appear quickly, but engines vary run to run, so re-ask across several days before declaring victory.
Finally, monitor. Answers move whenever a new roundup publishes or a Reddit thread gains traction, so a one-time win decays silently. Kairosy's Perplexity brand monitoring re-scans each tracked brand-by-market every Monday, checks your prompts daily, and emails alerts for a new negative keyword, a competitor becoming the preferred pick, a score drop, or an engine flipping sentiment. Plans as of September 2026: Basic $29/month (3 tracking slots, 15 prompts), Pro $99 (6 slots, 28 prompts), Growth $399 (20 slots, 70 prompts), with a 7-day free trial and no credit card. Why Is My Brand Missing From Perplexity Answers FAQs
Does blocking PerplexityBot remove my brand from Perplexity?
It removes your pages from Perplexity's search results, per its docs, but not your brand: Perplexity can still describe you from other people's pages, and Perplexity-User can still fetch a pasted URL. Blocking mostly guarantees the story is told without your input.
Why does Perplexity cite Reddit so much more than my website?
Profound's August 2024–June 2025 data put Reddit at 6.6% of all Perplexity citations, the top single domain, and Semrush's July–October 2025 study lists it first too. Threads answer "best X" and "X vs Y" wording directly and carry recent dates.
How long does it take for a fix to show up in Perplexity answers?
There is no published timeline. Perplexity retrieves live and records a last-updated date per result, so a re-crawled page can be used as soon as it is re-fetched; beating the incumbent sources depends on query fit. Re-test over several days.
Is being cited by Perplexity the same as being recommended?
No. Perplexity's answer about Klaviyo in Kairosy's scan named the brand while listing "high and fast-rising pricing, slow or unhelpful customer support" as its most common complaints. Track sentiment and the preferred pick, not just mentions.
Which tools track Perplexity answers over time?
Rank-tracker style tools log prompt positions; visibility scanners log sentiment and citations per answer, and Kairosy is the second type. The Perplexity rank tracker roundup compares the first. Kairosy's market-specific scans (Global plus 25 countries, paid plans) also catch a brand that is visible in the US and missing in Germany.
