Serpstat vs Ahrefs (2026): Backlink Index, KD Method, Pricing and AI

Serpstat vs Ahrefs splits cleanly: Ahrefs sells the bigger, faster-refreshing link graph, while Serpstat sells more seats, projects and daily lookups per dollar. On monthly billing the entry plans are $69 for Serpstat Individual and $129 for Ahrefs Lite, and Ahrefs reports 35 trillion backlinks against Serpstat's 1.7 trillion links.
Every price below comes from the vendors' sites, checked September 17, 2026. Weighing Semrush too? See Serpstat vs Semrush; for keyword research alone, read Ahrefs KW Explorer vs KWFinder.
Serpstat vs Ahrefs at a Glance: Which Tool Is Which in 2026?
Ahrefs is built around its crawler. Its big-data page lists "35 T External backlinks history", "209.5 M Domains (post-vetting)" and "16 YR Historical data", and says the backlink index is "updated with fresh data every 15–30 minutes". Brand Radar adds AI answer tracking, and plans run from $29 to $1,499 a month.

Serpstat is built around allowances. Rather than credits, it meters lookups per day and rank checks per month, bundles three users into Team, and opens API access at that tier. Its backlinks dataset page describes "1.7 trillion links and 170 million domains", and its difficulty score blends link counts with two signals that have nothing to do with links.
Serpstat vs Ahrefs Pricing: What Do You Get for $69 or $129 a Month?
Serpstat's pricing page loads with its annual toggle on, so the $50 shown first is the yearly rate; monthly billing is $69. Ahrefs shows monthly prices and says paying annually saves "up to 17%".
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | Users | Headline allowance |

Headcount reorders the ranking. Three people on Serpstat Team pay $129 a month, or $100 billed yearly. The same three on Ahrefs Lite pay $129 plus two $40 seats, $209 a month, and Lite cannot add a fourth.

Every cell is a vendor claim. Plan limits are verifiable at checkout; database sizes stay marketing until you test them on domains you know.
How Big Is the Serpstat Backlink Index vs Ahrefs, and Does Size Matter?
A backlink database is judged on two numbers, size and freshness, and Ahrefs leads on both by the vendors' own accounts. The 35T figure is roughly twenty times Serpstat's 1.7 trillion. Two caveats: Ahrefs labels that 35T "history" on its big-data page but "Live backlinks" on its Site Explorer page, and Serpstat's dataset page shows a "1.1T Backlinks" counter beside its 1.7 trillion headline. Treat both as upper bounds.

Freshness matters more day to day. Ahrefs says it crawls "5 M" pages a minute and adds new link data every 15–30 minutes. Serpstat's page says "Updated daily" but also that "Full index data is refreshed every 70 days", and its Backlink Checker offers a recrawl queue of "up to 500 pages per day" for URLs you need checked sooner. For confirming last week's placements, that gap decides the purchase.
The only published head-to-head is Serpstat's own December 2021 study, so discount it. It claims its index "contains about 60% of referring domains included in the index of alternative resources and about 40% of unique data not found in similar platforms", and concedes that "services track only 50-70% of the total backlinks a domain has". Before trusting either on the long tail, run a domain whose links you know through both.
Authority scores don't translate either. Ahrefs' DR explainer calls Domain Rating "the relative strength of a website's backlink profile" on a logarithmic scale; Serpstat Domain Rank counts sites linking to a domain plus the sites linking to those. A DR 45 and an SDR 45 are not the same thing.
How Do Serpstat and Ahrefs Calculate Keyword Difficulty Differently?
Ahrefs' KD looks at one input. Its explainer (updated December 15, 2025) says: "We pull the top 10 ranking pages for your keyword and look up how many websites link to each of them." It anchors the scale with "KD 0-5 – Top-ranking pages barely have any backlinks", "KD ~50 – Top-ranking pages have a couple of hundred backlinks" and "KD 90+ – Top-ranking pages have thousands of backlinks". Intent and content quality never enter it.
Serpstat's KD looks at three. Its launch post (October 20, 2021) names "number of backlinks", URL complexity (how many keywords each top-10 page ranks for, where few means a soft SERP) and whether the query is commercial, weighted with "special coefficients to calculate the 'commerciality' of the request". Serpstat fitted those coefficients with machine learning against keyword samples it graded by hand, and its KD tool page reports results on a 1-to-100 scale.

Expect disagreement: a commercial query with modest links can read harder in Serpstat, a heavily linked informational one harder in Ahrefs. Calibrate against keywords you already rank for, and never compare a Serpstat 40 with an Ahrefs 40. The free Serpstat checker stops at 10 lookups a day.
Who Should Buy Serpstat, and Who Should Buy Ahrefs?
- Solo consultant watching costs: Serpstat Individual at $69, or $50 billed yearly, for 5 projects and 100 lookups a day. Ahrefs Starter's 200 credits drain quickly.
- Agency with three to six people: Serpstat Team or Team x2, seats and API credits included. Three people on Ahrefs Lite cost $209, with no fourth seat.
- Link building and digital PR: Ahrefs. A 15–30 minute refresh, Link Intersect and 16 years of history are the work itself.
- Developers building dashboards: either. Serpstat Team includes 200,000 API credits a month; Ahrefs lists "API and MCP access" from Lite.
- Content teams on large sites: Ahrefs Standard, for 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords and Content Explorer.
- Markets outside the US: Serpstat claims 230 Google countries to Ahrefs' 217 locations, but one Trustpilot reviewer says it "does not provide ranking data for Russian domains or the Russian search market at all". Test it in the trial.
Reviews temper both. As of September 2026, Ahrefs has a 2.1 TrustScore from 321 Trustpilot reviews, half of them one-star, with recurring complaints about "suspicious activity" account blocks and credit limits. Serpstat's profile shows 3.0 from 19 reviews (42% five-star, 58% one-star), mixing cancellation gripes with "the price is lower than most tools". Nineteen reviews is an anecdote.

Can Serpstat or Ahrefs Show What AI Engines Say About Your Brand?
Both suites now count AI mentions; neither grades what the answer says. Ahrefs' Brand Radar runs "455M+" prompts through AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot and reports mentions, citations, estimated impressions and AI Share of Voice, "the percentage of AI responses within your topic set that mention or cite your brand versus competitors". Custom prompts (5, 10 or 20) come with Lite and up.
Serpstat's AI layer is lighter: the MCP connector and AI Overview Brand Opportunities Report on Team and above, AI Overview positions inside its daily rank tracker, and the separately sold LLM Brand Monitor, which Serpstat says covers more than 140 models. Neither vendor describes scoring each reply's sentiment or showing the full reply beside its sources.
Scanning the vendors themselves shows the gap. Kairosy's scan of Ahrefs on 2026-08-05 scored 62/100, verdict "At risk": ChatGPT 81, Claude 59, Gemini 58, Perplexity 52, with 96% visibility but 24 on the complaints question and 26 on alternatives. ChatGPT's downside list read "high and rising pricing, credit-based limits that can feel restrictive, and a lack of a free…" (full Ahrefs report).
Serpstat's scan that day landed at 50/100, "Vulnerable": Gemini 73, ChatGPT 44, Claude 44, Perplexity 38, and 14 on alternatives. ChatGPT warned buyers that its "keyword and backlink data can be less reliable or less deep than bigger tools like Semrush or Ahrefs, and some users report slow…" (full Serpstat report). The engines repeat the index-size argument almost word for word.

Kairosy is narrower: no rank tracking, keyword data or link index. It puts shopper-style questions to Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT, labels each reply negative, neutral or positive with the reasoning, keeps the URLs every reply cites, and turns each report into a ranked Fix Plan. Tracked prompts are rechecked daily; each tracked brand is rescanned on Mondays, with alerts for fresh negative keywords, a rival becoming the recommended pick, falling scores or an engine turning its tone. Plans cost $29, $99 or $399 a month for 3, 6 or 20 slots and 15, 28 or 70 prompts, and the 7-day trial needs no card. See AI brand monitoring for details, or Ahrefs alternatives for other suites.

How Should Traditional SEO Data and AI Visibility Work Together?
The suite measures demand; the scanner measures judgment:
- Export commercial queries ("best", "vs", "pricing", "alternatives") from Serpstat or Ahrefs and note which of your pages rank for them.
- Ask the same questions in an AI scan and log which URLs each engine cites. Ranking without being cited is a citability problem.
- Paste the cited third-party URLs into your backlink tool. Sources the engines trust that have never linked to you become the outreach list.
- Check crawler access before paying for add-ons. Google's AI features documentation says "To limit the information shown from your pages in Search, use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex controls", so snippet tags also limit AI Overviews. OpenAI's crawler documentation separates OAI-SearchBot, used "to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features", from GPTBot. The free AI crawl checker tests those bots and ClaudeBot; the AI-Ready Page Audit scores 33 checks across access, readability, structured data, citability and trust.
- Alert on both layers: ranking drops in the suite, sentiment flips and competitor-preferred answers in the scanner.

Serpstat vs Ahrefs FAQs
Is Serpstat cheaper than Ahrefs?
Usually. On monthly billing Serpstat Individual is $69 against $129 for Ahrefs Lite, and Serpstat Team includes three users for $129 while Ahrefs charges $40 to $80 per extra user. Ahrefs Starter is $29 but capped at 200 credits.
Which has the bigger backlink index, Serpstat or Ahrefs?
Ahrefs, by the vendors' own numbers: 35T backlinks and 209.5M vetted domains with fresh data every 15–30 minutes, versus Serpstat's 1.7 trillion links and 170M domains with a full refresh every 70 days.
Is Serpstat keyword difficulty comparable to Ahrefs keyword difficulty?
No. Ahrefs averages referring domains to the top 10 pages. Serpstat mixes backlinks, URL complexity and commercial intent. Same-looking ranges, different rulers.
Do Serpstat or Ahrefs track brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Ahrefs does, through Brand Radar and the 5 to 20 custom prompts included from Lite. Serpstat sells LLM Brand Monitor, which covers ChatGPT, as a separate product. Neither describes grading each answer's sentiment with reasons, which a reputation scanner adds.
Should I pick Serpstat vs Ahrefs for AI search visibility?
Pick on SEO needs first; both track AI Overviews and count AI mentions. To learn whether engines recommend you or a rival, and why, add a scan that saves full answers and citations, then fix what those answers criticize.
